As you might know, dress code is still an issue in the more formal establishments in London. Recently, I went to one of the traditional clubs for dinner with friends and when we arrived at the entrance, I was introducing my guests and signed the book. The manager whispered in a very decent matter to me that members are responsible for their guests adhering to the dress code and that this time an exception will be made for the gentleman in our group. My friends, recognizing that something went on, enquired and were told that the dress code would allow blue jeans but that the ones of my guest were “a bit too faded to be blue”’. However, the manager added that the gentleman was wearing a very nice tailored jacket and that he could pass. Such a perfect example of old school with a touch of modernity.
