I am sure, all of you have already experienced a short notice cancellation of a meeting that you agreed on with a friend. In fact, that’s now a common habit which is based on the assumption that everybody carries and checks his or her mobile phone on a regular basis when heading to the agreed meeting place. Now I constate that this trend has arrived in the business community: over the last months I have encountered several occasions where an appointment has been fixed by a company that is interested in collaborating with me well ahead and same day there is a cancellation and postponement to another day without giving a reason for it. That is new and while doing it on the private side it shows rather bad manners and lack of respect driven by a sheer selfish attitude (‘oh, I am just not in the mood for seeing this person now, so let’s cancel, it’s still 15 minutes to go’), the short notice cancellation is a sign of lack of professionalism. I don’t even allege that it is done with a bad intention, but what’s worse, someone who wants to be impolite or someone who’s just careless? Imagine you already prepared for the meeting, arranged other important appointments to take place on another day, you even did your travel planning or already went to the city of the meeting- and all you get is a nonchalant email message that your meeting had been cancelled and that you will be contacted for agreeing a new date and time. I am not a ‘ in the past all was better’ person at all, in fact I praise state of the art means of communication and I believe that we never lived more comfortable and independent than nowadays.
Like so many things, it’s not the modern tool of communication but the people using them. Like with money you will always see that some people have a lot but are not mature enough to handle it in a civilized way.
